Beach Campfires and Local Ecosystems: A Symbiotic Relationship

Jen

Hey there, beach lovers and friends of the earth! 🌍 Have you ever wondered how we can enjoy the beautiful beaches of Volusia County while taking care of our planet? Well, you're in for a treat because today we're talking about just that!

Volusia County's beaches are not just spots for fun; they're also home to some amazing wildlife, including our friend, the sea turtle! 🐢 And guess what? We at Beach Campfires are all about making sure we can have our s'mores and eat them too, without hurting our turtle buddies.

Why We Love Sea Turtles (And You Should Too!)

Sea turtles are super cool creatures that have been around for millions of years. They travel thousands of miles across the ocean, and then, they come back to the very same beaches to lay their eggs. How awesome is that? Plus, they help keep the ocean healthy by munching on things like jellyfish and sea grass.

But here's the thing: sea turtles need our help. They depend on dark, quiet beaches to nest and hatch their babies. That's why in Volusia County, we have a special sea turtle season from May 1 to October 31, when these wonderful creatures come ashore to start their families. There are actually a lot of official ordinances surrounding sea turtles here!

Here are three of our favorite fun facts about sea turtles:

●       Sea turtles can hold their breath for up to 5 hours! 🌊

●       They've been around since the time of the dinosaurs.

●       Daytona Beach is home to several species of sea turtles, including loggerheads, green turtles, and leatherbacks.

●       Only about 1 in 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings make it to adulthood – they need all the help they can get!

●       We have a local hospital that focuses on taking care of injured sea turtles! Read all about our friends at the Marine Science Center here!

Our Beach Campfire Promise

We love beach campfires. There's nothing like gathering around a warm fire, roasting marshmallows, and sharing stories under the starlit sky! But… we also love our beaches and want to make sure they're here for generations to come. That's why we've got a plan!

First off, we only set up campfires from November 1 to April 30. This way, we're not disturbing our sea turtle friends during their nesting season. We also make sure all our fires are out and cleaned up before we say goodnight, leaving the beach just as we found it.

And there's more! We're all about teaching and sharing how to enjoy the beach responsibly. From showing how to spot a sea turtle nest (and staying clear of it) to using turtle-friendly lighting, we're here to spread the love for our ocean buddies.

Keeping the Balance

Loving the beach means more than just enjoying its beauty; it means taking care of it too. By joining us for a beach campfire, you're not just signing up for a night of fun. You're also becoming part of a community that respects and protects our natural wonders.

We make sure to follow all local guidelines to keep our beaches safe and clean. And by educating and involving our guests in these practices, we're spreading the ripple of conservation far and wide!

Before We Say Goodbye (For Now)

As we wrap up, remember that our beach campfire season ends on April 30, just in time for our sea turtle friends to have their moment in the moonlight. So, if you're dreaming of a cozy night by the fire, with the sound of waves in the background and a sky full of stars above, now's the time to book your Beach Campfire experience!

Let's make memories that warm our hearts and protect our planet. Together, we can enjoy the magic of the beach while ensuring it remains a haven for all its inhabitants, flippered or not. See you by the fire! 🔥
